I’m viewing this newsletter as an extension of all the conversations I’ve had throughout the City over these past six months as a candidate. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet with and learn from a wide swath of City residents, business owners, and current/former government leaders, and I look forward to more meetings (and learning) going forward.

Next: Events. I’m looking forward to attending the City’s Juneteenth celebration at the Sherwood Center on the evening of June 19th (www.fairfaxva.gov/Events-directory/Parks-and-Recreation/Special-Events/Juneteenth-Celebration).
I’ll be on the dais for the June 22nd Planning Commission regular meeting, during which we’ll be hearing about the Courthouse Plaza redevelopment proposal – a topic that has come up in a lot of conversations recently, especially in neighborhoods that stand to be directly impacted. I’m glad that the Planning Commission has an opportunity to weigh in on this iteration of the proposal, because it’s a significant puzzle piece in the future of ‘downtown’ Fairfax City in addition to being an example of our City’s unique capacity, by nature of its scale and accessibility, to incubate small businesses. There will be multiple public hearings on this project in the coming months, but happy to chat with any interested parties now as part of the “working review” phase.
Other than these two events, the easiest place to find me over the next six weeks will be at summer swim meets! Whether you’re a Villa Gorilla, a CCH Shark, a Mosby Woods Mustang, or a Fairfax Frog, I hope your season is off to a great start. The Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL) is such an awesome example of the enduring impact of youth sports and community volunteering…it was a huge part of my childhood, and I feel so lucky that my kids get to participate in the same traditions. Donut Fridays, anyone?!
Lastly, speaking of impact: I want to highlight an extremely important volunteer opportunity for anyone interested in City school representation within the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) ecosystem. The Fairfax City school board is currently accepting applications for City representation on various FCPS panels and committees, including the newly formed Educational Technology Review Committee (ETRC), which is charged with making recommendations on educational technology, digital learning tools, and how technology supports teaching and learning in schools.
